At some point in life perhaps we have experienced a moment where we want to do so many things, ideas pop into our minds and we get excited about the prospect of making these ideas come to fruition. Yet we don’t. There are many reason why that maybe so and sometimes seeking external support is the best avenue. Sometimes it begins with recognising where you are, acknowledging the procrastination.

Perhaps acknowledging like a friend you allow the feeling to be express instead of lingering along. Often lingering procrastination un-motivate us which further leads to other negative inner feelings. Procrastination is a habit and how wonderful to come to that place of realisation. This means it can be broken.

Concentrate every minute on doing what's in front of you with precise and genuine seriousness, tenderly, willingly, with justice. And on freeing yourself from all other distractions. Yes, you can, if you do everything as if it were the last thing you were doing in your life, and stop being aimless, stop letting your emotions override what your mind tells you, stop being hypocritical, self-centered, irritable. You see how few things you have to do to live a satisfying and reverent life? If you can manage this, that's all even the gods can ask of you.

Marcus Aurelius

Like all habits, it takes practice of a new habit to override the old one and when you’ve done that, you have overcome. Take small steps towards moving yourself from a place of procrastination to a place of doing or putting your ideas into action. When you recognise and acknowledge the procrastination do it from a place of non judgement, like people often say be kind to yourself, see it as just that and no hard feelings. For the small steps forward, reward yourself with gratitude, kind words or do something that makes your feel good like eating cake or whatever works for you. When you think of things to do, rather that say you need to do it, have to do it, say ‘I choose to do this’ which reflects an internal feeling of self control, like you are the master of your destiny.

There are many strategies for overcoming procrastination, like a to do a list, a priority method, setting goals, time bound tasks to name a few. For some that works really well. Personally I have found that setting a goal in my personal life, my business life and family life works well for me. I only set one goal for each area of my life for the day. This way it is achievable.  In the aim of breaking procrastination, it is about training the mind for achievement versus having a mind that is not doing but procrastinating and feeling guilty. When those goals are achieved, I can always set more but I’m left with a rewarding feeling at the end of my day. I catalogue this feeling of achievement and reward in my body sensation to remind me how to do it again the next day.

Remember it is a habit, don’t be hard on yourself, recognise it and train the mind with a new way. Fit Mind Now offer workshops that can support training a new mindset. Check it out here.
